BPC-157 stands for “Body Protection Compound 157.” It is a chain of 15 amino acids (a pentadecapeptide) that was first discovered in human stomach juice. Scientists found that it is part of a larger protein called BPC that protects your stomach lining from damage.

Because it comes from stomach juice, BPC-157 is unusually stable. Most peptides get destroyed by stomach acid before they can do anything — which is why most peptide drugs must be injected. BPC-157 can actually survive in the digestive tract, which is one reason it has attracted so much attention.

Researchers noticed that BPC-157 did not just protect the stomach. In animal experiments, it seemed to help heal almost every tissue it was tested on: muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones, nerves, blood vessels, and even the brain. This wide-ranging healing effect is what made it famous in biohacking and sports medicine circles.

Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury (2026) — A well-designed rat study published in Scientific Reports (PMID: 42204242) tested BPC-157 for lower limb ischemia-reperfusion injury. Rats given BPC-157 had reduced oxidative stress, restored antioxidant defenses, less cell death, and improved muscle structure.

Tendon and Ligament Healing — Multiple rodent studies show BPC-157 accelerates tendon-to-bone healing and improves ligament repair. A 2026 review in JBJS Reviews (PMID: 42160466) classified BPC-157 as “investigational, with uncertain safety profiles.”

Gut Healing — BPC-157 was originally discovered as a gastric peptide. Rat studies show it heals stomach ulcers, protects against NSAID damage, and helps with inflammatory bowel conditions. Human Evidence: Very Limited
