In a striking new study, researchers found that resveratrol β€” the popular anti-aging compound found in red wine and widely sold as a supplement β€” has opposite effects depending on age. When given to young C. elegans worms (equivalent to young adulthood), resveratrol extended lifespan and improved health. But when the exact same treatment was given to middle-aged worms, it shortened lifespan and worsened health markers. The researchers then validated this in human fibroblast cells: resveratrol reduced signs of aging in normal young cells but made things worse in already-aged cells.
