What Is ER-100?
ER-100 is a brand new gene therapy. It tries to make old cells act young again. Think of it like hitting a reset button on tired, worn-out cells — but only partway. Scientists call this “partial cellular reprogramming.”
It was made by a company called Life Biosciences. One of its founders is Dr. David Sinclair from Harvard. He has spent over 30 years studying why we age.
In June 2026, the first person ever received this treatment. It was injected into their eye to try to fix age-related vision loss.
How Does It Work?
Every cell in your body has the same DNA. What makes a skin cell different from a brain cell is which parts of the DNA are turned on or off. As we age, this on/off pattern gets messy — like a book with pages stuck together.
ER-100 carries three special genes — called OCT-4, SOX-2, and KLF-4 — into cells. Together, they gently reorganize the DNA. They do not erase the cell’s identity. They just clean things up. The cell stays an eye cell. It just acts like a younger eye cell.
The treatment is given as a single injection into the eye. It does not go through your whole body.
Who Is Being Tested?
The first trial is for two eye diseases that mostly affect older people:
- Glaucoma — pressure builds up in the eye and damages the nerve that sends vision to the brain
- NAION — sometimes called a “stroke of the eye,” it causes sudden vision loss
If it works for eyes, the same idea could one day help other parts of the body — like the heart, brain, or muscles.
